Self-help and peer support are essential to the mental health system in Ontario. Many people find participating in a self-help group, joining a consumer/survivor initiative or working in a consumer/survivor-run alternative business is an important part of their recovery from mental illness. Family members also benefit from self-help groups and family initiatives.
Mental health professionals recognize and support the valuable role played by self-help and peer support groups. Self-help is a part of the continuum of care with treatment services and the social determinants of health, which include work, housing and income.
