Project Description

An Evaluation of Intensive Case Management for Persons with Severe Mental Illness Who Are Homeless

Principal: Tim Aubry
Location: Ottawa

This project is a randomized controlled trial that will evaluate an intensive case management program for persons who have a severe mental illness and are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The control condition is standard care – i.e., whatever other community services participants may receive, if any. Outcome and program implementation data are collected four times over two years, roughly every nine months.

The primary objectives of the research are:

  • evaluate program implementation to ensure that the program is delivering services to the targeted population in the intended manner
  • evaluate program outcome over 2 years
  • determine which program components (intensity, provider-client relationship, and provider characteristics) are predictive of outcome
  • compare costs of experimental and control conditions

Outcome variables will include clinical status, quality of life, social functioning, satisfaction with services, and a measurement of the cost of care.
