Mental Health and the Economy

During stressful times, employers need to treat their employees with fairness and respect, to ensure that they are able to move through this turbulent period with their health intact. At the same time, employees need to learn how to manage stress and improve their ability to cope.

The following articles — published by WorksWell, a project of CMHA Ontario — offer helpful advice and guidance for employers and employees during times of economic uncertainty.

For Employers

No one likes uncertainty. As an employer, you must realize that now is not the time to create unnecessary stress for your employees. Ongoing high levels of job stress can predispose employees and employers alike to burnout and depression. Now more than ever, in the face of a global economic crisis, organizations must be delivering strong business results without compromising their employees' mental health.

The following article, available in English and French, offers tips to help you work towards a healthy organizational culture.

For Employees

Are you stressed out and having a hard time coping? Your ability to cope is influenced by your perception of what is going on. One of the most effective ways to reduce stress while you are under increased demands is to increase your sense of control over the situation.

The following article, available in English and French, offers tips to help you cope with financial worries, health problems, work pressures and family matters.
